Kendrick Lamar took time out from tearing down the stage to simply speaking on one as he delivered a keynote speech at Forbes’ Under 30 Summit in Boston this earlier week. During his 27-minute appearance, the Compton rapper discussed the influence of his two biggest mentors, Top Dawg and Dr. Dre, TDE’s partnership with Interscope, and why hip-hop’s current statistical dominance is nothing new: “Hip-hop has always been the ultimate genre. Even when these numbers wasn’t out, we always moved the needle. We were the culture.”

K. Dot also weighed in on Colin Kaepernick’s NFL protest. “You want to be a person that stands for something. Whether the plan works or not, I want to be remembered for that. Same thing with Colin Kaepernick,” he said. “I’m sure they feel he wants to give up, they think he’s going to give up, but he wants to stand for something. Simple as that. You don’t look at the moment, whether it’s gonna work or not. No, you look at what the next generation is gonna receive from it.”
